CR&R is involved in community events and its employees volunteer for numerous worthy causes. Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano is grateful for CR&R’s investment in our program and our students as a Gold Sponsor.
“We are excited to partner with Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano in support of the work it does in the San Juan community. Access to education is critical to the healthy development of any community. We are inspired by the work Breakthrough does in providing the necessary tools and inspiration to ensure our youth go to college. As a member of the San Juan Capistrano community, it is a pleasure for CR&R Environmental Services to play an active role in this effort” said Dean Ruffridge, Senior Vice President, Solid Waste Division.
Thank you, to Mr. Ruffridge and CR&R for your generous support. We look forward to working together to better serve San Juan Capistrano youth.
On Thursday, May 1, San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library and SJC Public Library hosted Breakthrough middle school students to a local celebration of World Book Night. This world-wide event was first celebrated in England and Ireland in 2010 to spread a love for reading and to inspire passionate readers to go out into their communities and share copies of their favorite books. Ms. Shirley Sauvageau, from the SJC Friends of the Library, did just that! Because of her vision, Breakthrough students received dozens of donated books through World Book Night.
Breakthrough students and staff enjoyed a guided tour of the Library which concluded in the beautiful, brand-new Friends of the Library Bookstore. We are so grateful for the time Ms. Sauvageau and Library employees spent organizing this event, thank you for thinking of Breakthrough SJC for this World Book Night opportunity.
Be sure and mark your calendars for the Bookstore’s Grand Opening on June 1, 2014!
Our ninth consecutive summer program here in San Juan Capistrano is shaping up to be one of our finest yet! After a rigorous application and hiring process, we are excited to announce our 2014 Summer Teaching Team is set. We welcome five local Instructional Coaches, twenty college-age Teaching Fellows, and twenty-nine new middle school students into our Breakthrough SJC family.
On June 17th, Breakthrough Teaching Fellows will travel to San Juan Capistrano from institutions including Yale University, Dartmouth College, College of William & Mary, University of Florida, University of Nebraska, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, and Brown University. We appreciate our ten Homestay families who have generously opened up their homes to host our out-of-state Teaching Fellows. Homestays allows us to recruit exceptional role models and leaders from across the nation to teach our Breakthrough students each summer.
We also welcome twenty-nine new Marco Forster Middle School students into the Breakthrough SJC family! We had numerous strong candidates this year which made the selection process very competitive. All applicants submitted short and long essays, parent essays, teacher recommendations, and completed in-person interviews. Congratulations to the new Breakthrough Class of 2020, we will see you in June!
Save the Date!! Visitor’s Day is July 22, 2014. Come witness the magic of the Breakthrough SJC summer program and meet our outstanding students and teachers!
Breakthrough Collaborative, our national affiliate, has awarded Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano with the 2014 Innovation Grant. This Grant was awarded to only four of the thirty-three Breakthrough sites across the nation who exhibit success in developing and advancing innovative practices in the classroom and improving student achievement.
This $5,000 grant will directly impact Breakthrough San Juan students in three main ways. A portion of the money will be used to create a scholarship fund for one Breakthrough SJC student to attend UC Irvine’s Summer School Program. A second portion of the grant money allows us to hire a specialized College Skills 9th grade teacher this summer and finally, the Innovation Grant will set the foundation for a “students mentoring students” program among our high school and middle school students.
