Make sure to check out today’s OC Register where you can find Breakthrough SJC featured on the front page of the Capistrano Valley News! The article spotlights two of our students: Amy Fabian, an 8th grader who was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship in 2014 and Brian Salgado, a current senior who joined our program last summer and worked with us throughout his entire college application process. You can read the full two-page article in today’s paper or online.
Breakthrough SJC held its first “McStudent’s Night” fundraiser Tuesday evening at the local McDonald’s in San Juan Capistrano. From 5-7 p.m., Breakthrough supporters and community members were invited to come to the restaurant to purchase food to support the program. During the two-hour time span, 25% of the inside proceeds directly benefitted Breakthrough SJC and there was also a tip jar where customers could make direct donations. A dozen of our students volunteered at the event, greeting customers, reading orders, informing customers about the program, and dancing outside with a sign to alert passing cars.
In attendance were Breakthrough families, St. Margaret’s families, and Councilwoman Kerry Ferguson. In just two hours, Breakthrough SJC raised close to $500.00 with the help of McDonald’s! We would like to thank everyone who attended Tuesday night’s event and either donated or purchased food. Additionally, we want to thank Ross Pollard and Andrew Suckiel for providing us the opportunity to have a fundraiser at McDonald’s of San Juan Capistrano.
This past fall, Assistant Director Alex Serna collaborated with Director of Counseling Olivia Huie at JSerra Catholic High School to raise funds for a Breakthrough SJC scholarship that would benefit one Breakthrough senior. Alex Serna kicked off the campaign by going on JSerra’s “The Lion Report” to share the news with JSerra students and faculty. Within one week, JSerra students, staff, and parents raised $1,000 for one Breakthrough SJC senior to use for college expenses.
In order to receive the scholarship, Breakthrough SJC seniors had to complete an application which included short answer questions, a resume, and a letter of recommendation. Last Friday, the scholarship was awarded to San Juan Hills High School senior Cinthia Muniz. Following the news, Cinthia visited JSerra Catholic High School to meet with Olivia Huie and accept her scholarship during a live taping of “The Lion Report” (See the video here). Before the taping, Olivia Huie congratulated Cinthia on winning the scholarship and stated, “This is something we’ll try to do every year.”
We’d like to thank JSerra Catholic High School and Director of Counseling Olivia Huie for showing their support for Breakthrough SJC and funding a scholarship for our students. Congratulations to Cinthia for receiving the scholarship and for getting accepted into Cal State San Marcos!
